Marilyn’s Eyes consists of a band of unlikely characters whom we don’t see off-screen, at least in this way. When we think about mental health, there’s always an undertone of pity, hardship and despair somewhere. With Simone Godano’s latest, there’s an undertone of happiness there. Not like, haha look at these people. But there’s humour in their everyday struggles that no one outside of the Day Center for the Rehabilitation of Behavioral Disorders understands.

But it’s something that the audience will understand. Every interaction that these people have, every tiny quip and understanding between characters forms a sweet moment that only the audience can see. You want to learn more about these people because, in spite of their ticks and different behaviours, these are real and warm people. Each with their own stories of rejection and heartbreak that will make your heart swell.

The ups and downs that Clara and Diego go through are difficult to watch since you can see how it affects their lives. You empathize with them and sometimes are angry at them. But, at the end of the day, all these people need is some kindness and empathy. Unlikely friendships, relationships and everything in between make up Marilyn’s Eyes. And, honestly, it’s 114 minutes of sweetness altogether.

Marilyn’s Eyes tells us how our individualities make us stronger. Yes, sometimes it can turn into a hindrance in our lives but in every other respect, there’s strength in embracing who we are as individuals. As everyone in the rehabilitation centre grows as individuals, as people and as working members of society, you grow with them somewhere. Maybe it makes you more empathetic, maybe it gives you a reason to appreciate the things and people in your life a little bit more. Either way, the humour and softness of this film make it worth watching.

This isn’t to say that Marilyn’s Eyes won’t frustrate you. Oh, no-no. It’s deeply frustration in more ways than one. You are frustrated with these struggling people and for these struggling people. Life isn’t easy, but their struggles make you want to help them. Unfortunately, you can’t. And you are left to watch as the spectacle unfolds.

Stefano Accorsi and Miriam Leone are fantastic as the deeply disturbed and different Diego and Clara. There’s something familiar about these people and their interactions. You grow to empathise with them and fall in love with them as the runtime proceeds. These are sweet people; deeply flawed, but very sweet. There’s something very innocent about it all, in spite of houses burning down.
