Sometimes blindly saying yes to reviewing a film you know nothing about can be disastrous, but other times it’s a real treat. Sometimes it ends up being your favorite movie of the year. That is the case with THE POSTCARD KILLINGS, what I consider to be the perfect crime mystery thriller.
THE POSTCARD KILLINGS is directed by Danis Tanovic and is based on the New York Times bestselling novel of the same name by James Patterson and Liza Marklund. The cast includes Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Famke Janssen, Cush Jumbo, Denis O’Hare, Naomi Battrick, and Ruairi O’Connor. The story centers around the life of New York Detective (Morgan). His life is destroyed and turned upside down when his daughter and son-in-law are found brutally murdered in London during their honeymoon. Distraught and going out of his mind about who would do this to his baby girl, he travels to London to find the answers he so desperately seeks. He learns that his daughter and son-in-law are just two of the many heinous murders that are happening across Europe. Each murder is preceded by a postcard sent to a local journalist. They must work together to discover who the killers are and the truth behind their madness.
Although I’ve personally never read the novel (I will be now!), I must say I’m in love with this film and story. Everything about it is phenomenal and exactly what I want in a thriller as it leaves you at the edge of your seat. It’s tragic and suspenseful with captivating characters and twists that you won’t see coming.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a powerhouse of an actor. Everything he does is always amazing; however, I loved seeing a more vulnerable side to him. It’s truly heartbreaking to see him mourn the loss of his daughter while also trying to find justice for her. His on-screen chemistry with Cush Jumbo is chilling as they make the perfect team for hunting down bad guys. There’s one scene towards the middle-end featuring Morgan that shocked me to my core but I don’t want to give anything away. You’ll know when you see it. Naomi Battrick and Ruairi O'Connor are both incredible and deliver sensational performances that are unsettling and eerie.
Fair warning to those who may have a weak stomach, some of the murders are insanely brutal and it’s not easy to stomach. I’m used to horror and gore, though, so that didn’t faze me as much as the emotional and psychological elements did. I love watching a film like this because I feel like a detective who is trying to solve a mystery. THE POSTCARD KILLINGS is layered with twists and turns and sometimes I was right on point and other times I was easily fooled. This film is a reminder that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover because things and people aren’t always as they appear.
