Tiya Sircar (TV’s The Good Place) plays Kate Bradley, a New York City TV-news reporter stuck on the “bummer beat” — covering fires, accidents, etc. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t committed to the journalistic pursuit. She routinely risks her personal safety to nab compelling footage, which puts her editor, David (Mark Camacho), as well as her employer’s insurance company, in a snit. To the fluff beat she goes!

But as so often happens (sort of, anyway), her new good-news beat leads her down a tantalizing new path. A mysterious person dubbed Good Sam (short for Samaritan) has been leaving $100,000 in cash on the doorsteps of people who can use it — a struggling family, an oncologist who gives the money to a cancer-research foundation, stereotypical Americans with health insurance who are crippled by medical debt anyway because the important procedures aren’t covered, and all that. Kate puts on her investigative hat and digs in, attempting to find the who and the how and the why, and if the wheres and whens matter. She’s good at her job.

Kate’s work puts her in contact with two potential romantic interests. One, Jack Hansen (Marco Grazzini), is a slick hedge-fund manager and a friend of her senator father; despite her pop’s job, she pooh-poohs politics of all kinds, and blanches at Jack’s advances. But she eventually relents and has dinner with him. Eric Hayes (Chad Connell) is more her type, a sincere and humble hero firefighter she meets after he rescues three people from a burning building; coincidentally, the Good Sam trail leads to the door of his apartment. Hmm. Eric also asks her out, and nobody’s sure if red herring is on the menu.

The plot illustrates one of Kate’s inner struggles: the pollyanna vs. the cynic. Do people perform good deeds for their own sake, or to further their own interests? It’s no spoiler to say she meets both types on her quest to identify Good Sam.
